Common Name: Brodifacoum

Chemical Name: 3-[3-(4′-bromo[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthalenyl]-4-hydroxy-2H-1-benzopyran-2-one

CAS No.: 56073-10-0

Structure:
Molecular Formula: C31H23BrO3

Molecular Weight: 523.4

Physical Chemistry:

Brodifacoum is an off-white to fawn coloured,odourless powder.Melting point:228-232 C.It is of very low solubility in water; slightly soluble in benzene and alcohols; and soluble in acetone,chloroform and other chlorinated solvents. It also forms amine salts of limited solubility in water.Vapour pressure:Very low, less than 1.33 x 10-7 kPa (1 x 10-6 mmHg)/25C.

Toxicity:

Brodifacoum has a high acute oral toxicity (LD50 less than 1 mg/kg) for various species, including rodents and non-rodents. The dermal and inhalation toxicities are also high. Signs of poisoning are similar for all routes of administration and are those associated with an increased tendency to bleeding. Brodifacoum is a slight irritant for the skin and a mild eye irritant.

Application:

Brodifacoum is a bromylated hydroxycoumarin derivative;
an indirect anti-coagulant; and an effective stomach poison
which inhibits prothombin formation and induces capillary damage.To be effective it usually requires only a single ingestion of a bait formation in one feeding to produce a kill.
